Chapter 9

Ashley

The plane dips, and I lock my arms around Kit’s neck, letting out a squeal. Then he kisses me as if he’s unwilling to take “no” for an answer. But here’s the thing. I want to get to know him so much better than I do. Or maybe it’s me I want to explore. I’ve never let a man take me or have sex like we did. It’s as if my mind is trying to override my heart, telling me that if forever love doesn’t exist, how can love at first sight? But I’m feeling something for this man. Something deep, and that scares me. Kit is no longer a means to free my sisters. He’s a means to free my fearful heart. “How can you ask me to be your wife when you don’t even know me? I need to prove to you I’m more than an indebted servant as Malcolm clearly pointed out.”

“Screw that asshole. You’re what I want. You’re strong and very sexy.” He burrows his head in the crook of my neck, kissing there. “You’re everything that’s good. Good for me. I need that. Give me a real chance,” he demands. “This week, let me show you the real me. Say yes. Please?”

I nip at his lip, then one kiss turns into another. The cloudy turbulence doesn’t stop us, and before I answer, Kit lifts me from the seat and hustles to the back of the plane to the bedroom. It’s tan leather and dark wood, oval windows stamped over the mattress where he lays me down. But this is who we are, a storm in the making as he slides his hands into my neckline, drawing my outfit down until I’m bare to him. What he doesn’t know is that I’ve felt just as bare with clothes on. “A night of firsts.”

“For me too. I’ve never shared this bed with anyone, nor where we’re heading, and I’m not only talking about our destination. Ashley, I’m falling for you.”

Falling, as in love. He doesn’t say the words, but then he doesn’t have to. I feel the torment in this man fade when he places his hands on me, when he kisses me, when he makes love to me. It’s all I can hope for.

Sometime in the night, I wake and we’re still flying, the purr of the engine at a steady hum. Kit’s spooning me, the weight of his arm locking me to his body. I feel more at peace than I ever have. But as I open my eyes, I spot a gold plate fixed over the threshold: Siegel.

A night of firsts....I no longer fear. I’m falling for him too. As my eyes grow heavy, I accept him, all of him—the gangster rock star who’s more content beside me than I’ve ever seen him, and I feel treasured, safe.

A few hours must pass because I wake to a very hungry Kit, and nothing about this man wants food. He roams calloused fingers I suspect have been made hard from plucking the strings of his guitar over my breasts.
